Here’s What to Know About the IRS-Required ID Check

If you haven’t signed your tax return with us yet this year, you may notice we’ve introduced a more streamlined way to deliver your return and complete the signing process through our secure client portal.

This updated process allows you to review your return, sign electronically, and handle any required payments all in one place for a more convenient and efficient experience.

As part of this, you’ll see a quick identity verification step when signing your return. It typically takes just a few minutes. While this step is required by the IRS as part of their guidelines for electronic signatures, it also plays an important role in helping protect you by reducing the risk of identity theft and ensuring your return is filed securely.

For a bit more context on how this works and why it benefits you, Brian walks through it in the video below, or you can continue reading for a quick overview.

What to Expect When Signing Your Return for the First Time

The first time you sign a return with us each year, you’ll be asked to upload a government-issued ID (such as a driver’s license) and take a quick selfie. This is part of our identity verification process, and it should only take a few minutes to complete.

Once you’ve completed it, you’re all set for the year. Even if you have multiple returns with us, you’ll only need to complete this step one time.

This is all part of our broader effort to make your experience as simple and efficient as possible. Through our secure client portal, you can review, sign, pay, and manage your tax return all in one place without printing, scanning, or back-and-forth.

Built with Security in Mind, and We Don’t Store Your Information

At the same time, we’ve prioritized security every step of the way. We’ve partnered with Stripe, a global leader in financial infrastructure, to handle the identity verification process. Stripe processes over $1.9 trillion in payments annually and operates with bank-level security standards, so your information is protected at the highest level.

Importantly, we do not store your ID or identity verification data. Your information is used only for verification and is not retained by our Firm.

A Simpler, More Secure Experience for YOU

Our goal is to create a process that feels both simple and secure, giving you confidence that everything is handled correctly while keeping things as easy as possible on your end. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via email or phone.

As always, we are here to make the complex simple.
