Five Years Strong: MGA's Ongoing Commitment to Beautifying Our City and Giving Back

Written by MGA Team | Jun 19, 2024 4:30:00 PM

At MGA, we deeply value our local community and are always eager to contribute to its well-being. Last month, we took the time to do just that with our annual spring day of service, dedicating our time and efforts to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Houston's cherished Buffalo Bayou Park.

From Office to Outdoors, A Team Effort with Lasting Impact

Our day kicked off bright and early at Japhet Creek, a bayou tributary stretching north, deep into the Fifth Ward neighborhood. Zooming out and looking at the bigger picture, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership is working to bring new parks and trails, vibrant cultural destinations, affordable housing, and infrastructure improvements to the Greater East End and Fifth Ward neighborhoods in Buffalo Bayou East. We were happy to be a small part of bringing some of those envisioned enhancements to life through our day of service.

From loading materials left from the previous project to an impressive cleanup under the bridge and along the stream, our team worked tirelessly. We also tackled the removal of invasive species such as Hedge Parsley, Ragweed, Sunflowers, Horseweed, and vines.

The visual difference was immediately noticeable, but the long-term impact of our work was even more significant. By removing these invasive plants, which can drop a minimum of 100 seeds per plant, we have helped create an environment where native plants can gain a strong foothold. This will promote a healthier, more balanced ecosystem in the park.

Watch the video below to recap our day and see our incredible team members hard at work (and having fun!).

Our Continued Commitment to Our Community and City

This is the fifth year we have dedicated our spring day of service to Houston’s Buffalo Bayou Park. We have planted trees along the bayou as part of the Hurricane Harvey cleanup. We have also helped mulch the beds around and above the lake at the Lost Lake Visitor Center, providing major benefits to the plants. Last year, we spent our time spreading over 12 yards of mulch (which equates to about 170 wheelbarrow loads!) around the tress at the Houston Police Officers Memorial in preparation for their annual memorial service.

It’s always a rewarding experience to dedicate our time and resources to preserving this park and keeping it a beautiful and exciting place to visit.
